In Memorium : Brigitte Bardot
The end of last year also saw the loss of another passionate voice for animal welfare – French film icon Brigitte Bardot.
Brigitte contributed a beautiful and thoughtful foreword for Pollyanna and Anna-Louise’s book On Top of The World, and the Pollyanna Pickering Foundation also collaborated with La Foundation Brigitte Bardot (FBB) on campaigns to end seal culling in the High Arctic.
Brigitte described Pollyanna as ‘a painter gifted with an exceptional artistic talent’ saying ‘we share a common love of animals and are so naive and full of admiration in the way we look at the natural world’.
In her foreword to ‘On Top of the World’ she quoted St Expury saying “ ‘One only sees with the heart – the essential is invisible to the eyes’ Thank you Pollyanna and also congratulations to Anna-Louise who has written such a beautiful book”
Despite the sometimes controversial political views she expressed in later life, Brigitte will be remembered as one of the most iconic film stars of the fifties and sixties, capturing the zeitgeist of the era and rising to global stardom. However at the age of 39 she walked away from acting to devote her life entirely to the welfare of animals.
The FBB acts directly on the ground through animal rescues and aid to shelters, sterilisation campaigns for stray animals, as well as by engaging in the animal protection conversation at events and conferences. To date the foundation has taken in more than 12,000 animals and worked in 70 countries. Brigitte’s exceptional compassion for her fellow creatures will be her true legacy.
