Anna-Louise Travels to the Galapagos Islands

To mark a landmark birthday Pollyanna’s daughter Anna-Louise fulfilled a lifetime ambition in March this year, joining a National Geographic Expedition ship in the Galapagos Islands,. The ship is spending 10 months of 2019 in the islands, staffed by naturalists who are conducting ongoing research into the unique wildlife found in the region.

Anna-Louise always accompanied Pollyanna on her working expeditions to study and paint endangered species in their natural habitats, documenting the journeys photographically, as well as writing the acclaimed series of books which resulted from the journeys. An award-winning photographer in her own right, she joined the ship for three weeks, and took full advantage of the opportunity to shoot the wildlife including the endemic marine iguanas, and iconic blue footed boobys performing their highly entertaining mating dance. Anna-Louise commented “The wonderful thing about photographing in the Galapagos islands is that the wildlife has no fear of humans – the birds and animals are just as likely to come towards you as they are to move away!”

Anna-Louise also took the opportunity to deliver educational resources of books and art materials to the Tomás de Berlanga School on behalf of The Pollyanna Pickering Foundation. Located on Isla Santa Cruz the school has scholarships provided by the National Geographic Fund with a focus on conservation, and prides itself on high academic standards and a real world approach to growing up in such a unique place renowned for its wildness. The school has a regular need for educational supplies due to the isolated nature of island living and a climate that causes rapid book deterioration
