Work Begins on Construction of Shock Free Zone in Costa Rica

We are absolutely delighted to be able to share this photographs of roadworks with you! In June we were proud to announce that the Spirit of the Jaguar exhibition raised £5000.00 to help protect rainforest wildlife in a very specific and immediate way by creating a Shock Free Zone in Costa Rica. These images show that the money has already been put to work and construction has begun. In October the Costa Rican Electricity Institute closed roads in order to start isolating the secondary lines in Playa Chiquita over a span of about 300 meters.

They then began the process of insulating the transformers and electrical lines that are currently without insulation, posing an often lethal threat to rainforest wildlife. The Electricity Institute has graciously volunteered to provide professional staff, equipment and specialized vehicles for installation free of charge, thereby maximising the impact of the project’s funding.

The Jaguar Rescue Centre who are coordinating the project told us “This is one of the most dangerous areas for wild animals regarding the power lines.”

On receiving the grant from the Foundation, which will fund their entire Shock Free Zone program for a year they wrote to Anna-Louise saying “We are very sorry to hear of the loss of Pollyanna and offer our deepest condolences. We really appreciate your help and you can not imagine how much this donation helps us with our work. It is thanks to you that we can proceed with our project and help as many animals as possible.”
